Rear delts: face pull, reverse fly or row?Deltoide posterior: face pull, crucifixo inverso ou remada?
If you only row, your rear delts may be getting less work than you think.
The rear delt is the back part of the shoulder — key for posture, shoulder health and that "3D" look. A biomechanics study published in Acta of Bioengineering and Biomechanics estimated how much force the rear delt produces in three popular exercises.
Results
- Bent-over reverse fly (dumbbells): ~58.6 N
- Standing face pull: ~58.2 N — statistically tied with the reverse fly
- Bent-over dumbbell row: ~47.9 N — significantly lower
In the row, the lats become the main movers and "steal" part of the work from the rear delt.
Why the fly and the face pull win
Both are almost pure horizontal abduction — opening the arms out to the side — which is exactly the rear delt's main job. The face pull also adds external rotation of the shoulder, making it a more complete, multi-plane movement.
How to use it
Keep rows for your back. For rear delts specifically, add reverse flyes or face pulls — 2 to 3 sets, 2 to 3 times a week, with controlled form.
Limits: computer modeling based on 3D motion capture (not direct EMG), in only 10 young untrained men. The study's main goal was building a model for rehabilitation robots; the exercise comparison was its first step.

O deltoide posterior é a parte de trás do ombro — importante pra postura, saúde do ombro e aquele visual "3D". Um estudo de biomecânica publicado na Acta of Bioengineering and Biomechanics estimou quanta força o deltoide posterior produz em três exercícios populares.
Resultados
- Crucifixo inverso inclinado (halteres): ~58,6 N
Mantenha a remada pras costas.
