Losing weight ≠ losing fatPerder peso ≠ emagrecer
How to make sure the weight you lose is fat — not muscle. Including if you use Ozempic, Wegovy or Mounjaro.
When the scale goes down, it isn't only fat leaving. Part of that weight can be muscle — and the more aggressive the diet and the less you train, the bigger that part tends to be. Losing muscle slows your metabolism, makes you weaker and makes it easier to regain the weight later.
Why this matters more today
GLP-1 medications such as semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound) reduce appetite so much that people can sustain large calorie deficits for months. That's powerful for weight loss — but in body-composition studies of these trials, a meaningful share of the weight lost (often around a quarter to a third or more) came from lean mass. Without strength training and enough protein, you risk losing muscle you'll want to keep.
The goal is not just a smaller number. It's a body that is leaner, stronger and able to keep the result.
What protects your muscle
- Strength training 2–4 times per week. It's the signal that tells your body muscle is still needed. Full-body or upper/lower splits work well, with effort close to failure on most sets.
- Enough protein. Around 1.6–2.2 g/kg/day during fat loss. On GLP-1s, when appetite is low, protein should be the first thing on the plate.
- A moderate deficit. Losing roughly 0.5–1% of body weight per week is a good pace for most people.
- Sleep. Short sleep increases appetite and shifts weight loss toward lean mass.
- Track more than weight. Waist, photos and strength tell you if you're losing the right thing.
And after?
Long-term studies show that most people regain much of the weight they lose within a few years — the brain pushes back with more hunger and less energy expenditure. The habits you build during the process — training, protein, routine — are what make the result last after the diet or the medication ends.
If you use GLP-1 medication, always follow your doctor's guidance. My role is to coach your training and habits, working alongside your medical team.
